Magnitude of Ç.U. F.O.M.-EMRAP
Ç.U. F.O.M.-EMRAP was founded on 4800 m2 detached land. Closed space is 1300m2, open space is 3500m2. While administrative and personnel offices are together with small animal units, pigpen, sheep pen and half-open rabbit garden are in the form of separate buildings.
The Department of Experimental Animal Care-Production and The Production of Experimental Animal
Ç.U. F.O.M.-EMRAP consists of a main building and additional buildings in an independent garden. The departments of care and production of rat, mouse and rabbit is located in sectors of main building. There are operating room of big and small animals, post-op, non-vital surgery room, two researcher’s animal rooms, administrative and personnel rooms. There are two pigpens, post-op, animal care rooms, rabbit garden consisting of four departments which came into service in 1990,
,sheep room, frog pool, store, feed room, personnel locker room and cold room in additional buildings and its departments (first of them was built in 1988, second one came into service in 1999). The crematorium which was built in 1990 for burning murdered or dead experimental animals is automatic and has a feature that automatically sprays fuel-oil. Our center that produced only mouse and small number of rat becomes a place where five different experimental animals (Sprague Dawley and Wistar rat, Bulb/C and white dormouse, rabbit, pig and sheep) are produced regularly and sufficiently. Several request are made by different universities from our country for experimental animal and demands are covered by producing according to request. The production of experimental animal is planned in accordance with the requests of researchers. The maximum production of experimental animals in our center changes according to request. Researchers have to pay for the request of experimental animal. Price of the experimental animals is determined by The Council of Ç.U. F.O.M.-EMRAP. Generally, during the determination of price, prices of the other production centers, increase rate of support of Ç.U. Unit of Scientific Research Projects to the projects and cost of feed are considered. The price are kept pretty low than the other production centers for the researchers of our university.
Operating Rooms
There are two operating rooms in center. One of them is used for microsurgery and the other one is used for the studies doing with experimental animals (pig, dog etc). Surgical microscope(with camera), standard microsurgery instruments set, eye microsurgery instruments set, sphygmomanometer, light microscope, operation tables, binocular loop, pet clippers, laryngoscope, anesthesia machine, electrocautery, aspirator, portable x-ray unit, operating room ceiling light, first-aid chest, standard surgery instruments, vascular surgery instruments, basic surgery instruments, bone surgery instruments and autoclave are in this department. While big animal experiments are done in Ç.U. F.O.M.-EMRAP, small animal experiments are done in the departments next to Ç.U. F.O.M.-EMRAP.
Contributions of Ç.U. F.O.M.-EMRAP To the Academic Studies
The aim of a center is to provide basis and experiment animals within the bounds of possibility to anyone that wants to research in medicine and biology. The center does not only provide a basis and experiment animals to research but also provides a course about experiments and experiment animals. For that purpose, researchers in The Department of General Surgery at The Faculty of Medicine make rotations for a month since 1997. Additionally, "Experiment Animals Course" was added to schedule as a result of collaboration with Graduate School of Health Sciences, "511-Experiment Animals I" and "512-Experiment Animals II" are given in requested period. "Course of Laparoscopic Surgery in Pigs" was held throughout the country in 1999. "Course of The Education and Application of Using and Care of Experiment Animals" is held in every fall and spring semester on a regular basis. Researchers' requests of either experiment animals or experiment study environment is evaluated by the management of Experimental Research and Application Center of Medical Sciences. Requests that are found insufficient in terms of scientific, ethics and method are rejected. To evaluate requests, formerly named as, "Çukurova University Experimental Research and Application Center of Medical Sciences Experiment Animal Ethics Committee" was founded and directions of the committee went into operation by the approve of Central Board of Experimental Research and Application Center of Medical Sciences. Directors and officers of Ç.U.F.O.M.-EMRAP are not in the position of anyone directly researching.
Some Details About Development of Ç.U.F.O.M.-EMRAP
As several centers in our university, Ç.U.F.O.M.-EMRAP has not its own budget and staff. The little part of centrically incomes is provided by sold experiment animals to researchers. Whereas, only the feed cost of animals can be afforded by this provided income. The major part of investments that were made in Ç.U.F.O.M.-EMRAP is carried out by support of Rectorship and the other part of investment is carried out by support of The Deanship of Faculty of Medicine. The center has been transferred to The Faculty of Medicine from Rectorship in 2013, thus its name "Experimental Research and Application Center of Medical Sciences" was changed as "Çukurova University Experimental Research and Application Center of Medical Sciences".
